Summer Relief Campaign for Bull Shelter – How You Can Help

As the temperatures in Gujarat rise above 40 degree C. every year, millions of people crave for cool drinks, air conditioners and shade. Without the help of Sadbhavna Vrudhashram’s initiative “Bull Shelter”, which provides temporary refuge for the 1700+ abandoned bulls, this would not have been possible. The summer season is the most critical season of the year. These are conditions the heat causes in animals that are weak at the entrance gates who are already dealing with dehydration, exhaustion, skin ailments and life-threatening stress.

This is the tale of those bulls and ways that you can make a difference today.

So what is Bull Shelter?

Bull Shelter is an initiative , affiliated to Sadbhavna Vrudhashram located in Mota Rampar, off the Jamnagar – Rajkot Highway, Gujarat ( PIN: 360110). It was established on Independence day, August 15, 2015, and has several projects in its portfolio: dog shelter, tree plantation drive, animal hospital, an old age home of senior citizens and, most importantly, the largest bull shelter in Gujarat.

The bull shelter or Gaushala for bulls, also known as Nandi Ashram is born out of a harsh truth that many refuse to look upon: many bulls, once old enough or too weak to work, are thrown away on roads, highways and fields. They don’t have a farmer taking care of them, no shade from the sun, and no medical help for their wounds. Most of them are left to fend for themselves until Sadbhavna intervenes.

Why are Abandoned Bulls in crisis in summer in Gujarat?

The summers in Gujarat are very hot. For districts such as Rajkot, Jamnagar, Morbi, Surendranagar, the temperature frequently surpasses 42 to 45 degree celsius in the daytime during the period April to June. Uncomfortable for healthy humans. There is a risk that it is fatal in injured and malnourished bulls.

Without you, every summer, What the 1700+ bulls at Bull Shelter experience:

Severe dehydration: In summer the water consumption of bulls increases dramatically in times of high summer heat, which necessitates a dramatic increase in the ashram’s water needs.

Fodder Scarcity: Lack of Green fodder during dry summer days state-wise in Gujarat. The ashram has to procure and store the nutritious supplemental feeds at much higher prices.

Summer is when heat-related illness (such as heatstroke, skin infections, respiratory stress, and foot-and-mouth) dramatically increases, and puts an extra strain on in-house veterinary staff.

Higher demand for medical assistance: New rescues arriving in the summer are frequently in an “acute” state having collapsed in the road, or been struck by traffic. The cost of emergency treatment increases significantly.

When a bull arrives at the gate of Bull Shelter they are no longer lost or forgotten. They are now a part of our family and we will make sure they are safe and happy each and every day.

What Your Donation Helps Fund. What Your Donation Buys:

The Summer Relief Campaign 2026 at Bull Shelter is a targeted and time-limited fundraising initiative aimed at raising funds for the May-June-July-August season. All funds raised from the Campaign are dedicated to:

Feed for nutrition and emergency feed supplies.

The ashram supplies all the bulls with a well-balanced ration of dry fodder, green grass, grain supplements, and mineral salts. During the summer there is a shortage of green fodder and a rise in the prices. You can help the ashram prepurchase and keep sufficient stocks for all animals to eat, irrespective of market conditions.

Proper Water Quality Infrastructure.

Summers in Gujarat are the most important time where water is the most critical resource. The ashram has installed large capacity water tanks, tanker delivery and drinking points all over its shelter premises. Ongoing operational expenses would be significant for this infrastructure, such as pumping, pipelines, storage tanks, are high during the summer.

Free Veterinary and Medical Services.

Sadbhavna Vrudhashram has an animal hospital on the premises to take care of the animals of the bull shelter. The summer campaign in particular covers the expenses for treating the animal’s wounds, using the skin and treating dehydration with fluids, and emergency surgical interventions as well as the cost of medicines. No animal is turned away for lack of funds.

Shelter Maintenance and Cooling Facilities

As more and more people are rescued, the ashram’s massive shelter infrastructure — shade structures, ventilated barns, bedding — needs to be taken care of and expanded. These facilities are prevented from heat stress by summer relief funds for the repair, upgrade and cooling.

Beyond Bulls: The wider reach of ‘Bull Ashram’

Providing support to Sadbhavna Vrudhashram’s Bull Shelter is not just about taking care of individual animals, it is a step towards the protection of animals. The project delivers measurable and documented social and environmental benefits, which impact rural and semi-urban Gujarat:

Less road accidents: Stray bulls on the highways cause hundreds of accidents on the roads every year in Gujarat, many of which result in death. By sheltering them, this hazard is eliminated.

Environmental conservation: The tree plantation programme, conducted concurrently with the ashram, afforests and preserves thousands of trees every year, thereby supporting the green cover in Saurashtra.

A unified community welfare:The old age home for senior citizens with no family support is located on the same campus, so your donation will benefit a community welfare system.

Animal hospital and dog shelter: Stray dogs are given shelter and medical care in the same institution, hence, the impact of each rupee given is multiplied.

The Vision aims to increase the bull population to 10,000 in the future.

The population of native cattle breeds like Gir and Kankrej are found in Gujarat with the number of male bulls that are becoming economically “unproductive” due to the mechanisation of agriculture. It’s staggering the extent of the abandonment — and so is Sadbhavna Vrudhashram’s response.

The ashram’s long-term vision is to increase the number of bulls that it can accommodate until it reaches its capacity of 10,000, where it will become one of the biggest bull sanctuaries in India. Achieving this requires continued donor funding, increased facilities, more veterinarians and a much greater operating budget. The Summer Relief Campaign is not simply a lifeline for a single season — it’s a building block to establishing a financial base which enables large-scale permanent animal rescue to exist.
